Today it has been announced that the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan will increase the congestion charge fee by 30% next month from June 22nd.

The news has arrived after is was revealed yesterday that Transport Of London had received a huge bailout of £1.6 billion from the Government due to Covid-19 – This bailout consists of a £1.1 billion grant and a £505 million loan.

The congestion charge with rise from £11.15 to £15 a day and will be enforced for seven days a week rather than just at weekends. The operating hours will also be temporarily extended in the evening from 6pm to 10pm

Both the congestion charge and ultra-low emission zone charge were suspended in March due to the current pandemic but is now set to be introduced as of Monday in order to enable key workers to get to work easier. The ultra-low emission zone will cost £12.50 a day and be applied 24 hours a day, seven days a week to older vehicles

Speaking on the deal, Sadiq Khan commented; “I want to be completely honest and upfront with Londoners – this was not the deal I wanted but it was the only deal the government put on the table” he explained, “I had no choice but to accept it to keep the Tubes and buses running,” Sadiq Khan added “Fares income has fallen by 90% in the last two months because Londoners have done the right thing and stayed at home – so there simply isn’t enough money coming in to pay for our services.
