In Talks With Nigeria’s Genre-Defying Star: Alpha P

Introducing 18-year-old, Nigerian singer-songwriter and rapper – Alpha P. A young visionary who is on the verge of becoming one of the artists responsible for spearheading a nuanced and refreshing sound permeating through the country. Despite the mixed reviews his first project received last year, the Edo State star powered forward, maintaining his unique sonic across every release thereafter. Now, Alpha P follows up his predecessor – “King Of Wolves” with his brand-new EP entitled “Wolves & Mustangs, Vol. 1”.  Which boasts four contagious, ear-pleasing and flavoursome records which are sure to slot sublimely into your playlists rotation.

Hey Alpha, introduce yourself please! 

My name is Princewill Emmanuel, an eighteen year old artist from Edo state, Nigeria.

So you are signed to Universal Music Nigeria, how has working with a label been? 

Honestly, it’s been quite interesting because we’ve grown from being business partners to become a family, so it makes it easier to share ideas with each other. I am glad I have a team who understands my vision.

I read that at one point you were juggling music and school, that’s a different type of hustle. – How was that experience? 

I’ve been juggling music and school since I was in high school, so I kind of got a hang of it with time. Although I had to miss several tests and skip school sometimes, I’m glad I made the decision to keep pushing for my music career.

So as someone isn’t familiar with Nigeria, I was doing some research and I saw that your hometown of Edo State has a lot of talent bubbling within it! – Is there any pressure because of that?

Absolutely not, I’m super proud to come from a state filled with so many talents and seeing people from Edo state conquering the game now is a great feeling. This is not a one-man mission, it’s a movement and I’m honoured to be part of it.

Have you had any support from any African giants? 

Yeah, it’s been all love since I dropped my EP ‘King of The Wolves ‘ in November 2019. Davido heard one of my records, and immediately he heard the chorus he was like ‘open up a verse space I’m jumping on this track’, that’s the big bro right there. Nasty C gave me a shout out in several of his interviews earlier this year and we have something in the works. Burna boy heard a verse I did on a mutual friends song and he asked to meet me, but we haven’t had the time to meet up yet because as you know it’s been a crazy year. I worked with the Queen of afrobeats, Tiwa Savage on her album and she’s just an amazing soul. I met her even before I got my deal with universal music and she’s just been so supportive since then, a big shout out to her. The list goes on and I’m grateful to every superstar out there supporting me and my vision.

I know that Nigeria is heavily dominated by Afrobeats, what’s the response been like to the western flavour you incorporate into your music?

People love it because it’s different!

Describe your sound in 3 words?

Relatable, soulful and awakening.

Your most recent project ‘King Of Wolves’ was amazing! What was the response like other than the fact that it streamed really well? 

Thank you, those songs were unexpected from a 17-year-old and a lot of people had different opinions at first, but after a couple of weeks, people genuinely loved it.

If you were to introduce a new listener to your music what song from the album would you want them to play first? 

Paloma!

Are there any new tracks on the horizon? 

I got a lot of tracks in the vault, but we will be dropping a couple before the year ends.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 

Honestly, I don’t know, I’m just going to grow and evolve with time and so will my music.
