Speculation has arisen that Ashley Walters, otherwise known in the urban community as Asher D, could be starring as the next Doctor Who in the popular BBC series.

After having shot to mainstream fame amongst TV buffs as leading actor in the Channel 4 drama Top Boy in 2011, the multi-talented 30-year-old (31 at the end of this month!) has featured in various popular TV series including Sinbad, True Love and Inside Men, all broadcast by the BBC.

It seems Asher D’s BBC career may not yet be over, following the announcement that Matt Smith will be leaving the lead role at the end of 2013, and Walters is in the running to lead next. Idris Elba and Richard Ayoade are other names that have also been mentioned in the race to become the next Doctor.

Having already appeared in the show just over a month ago as one of the Van Baalen brothers in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, it seems Walters may have one over on Elba and Ayoade – however with Elba’s more mature, doctorly looks and Ayoade’s more mainstream appeal, after having appeared in more well-known TV shows, who knows who might be up next?
