Our top 5 to catch at Glasto 2013

In recent years, it seems that urban acts are starting to make weighty impact on music festivals throughout the country. Less than a decade ago, seeing more than one or two urban-orientated acts at mainstream music events was unheard of, and they were more often than not offered as a ‘side dish’ earlier on the day on one of the smaller stages, rather than in the main arena as an evening act.
However, with the breakthrough of such artists in recent years such as Dizzee Rascal and Example, artists of this calibre are now being offered more than a fleeting appearance during the afternoon. Many are moving onto bigger and better stages with the ability to reach out to more than a handful of festival-goers passing time with a picnic in the ‘upcoming artists tent’ or similar.
This month, some of our favourite urban acts are making significant appearances at the Glastonbury festival held at Worthy Farm, Pilton, and we have compiled a countdown consisting of our top five ‘must see’ artists…
5. EXAMPLE
Fulham born singer and rapper Example released his first album signifying strong potential to be a leading UK hip-hop artist in 2007, however in recent years he has moved over to the dance-electronica size of things. Nevertheless, we still rate him for his consistency and talent for all types of music.

4. PROFESSOR GREEN
After becoming a well-respected battle rapper during the 2000s, Pro Green has had mainstream success alongside his underground material. The Hackney-based artist has taken a more mature approach to his music in the last couple of years, but his humorous lyrics and creative song concepts remain.

3. MAVERICK SABRE
Another Hackney-born artist, singer Maverick Sabre has collaborated with Professor Green, of which their single Jungle reached the UK Top 40. His uniquely soulful, moving vocals have given the Anglo-Irishman that magic touch over many urban singers currently trying to make it in the UK.

2. DIZZEE RASCAL
No introduction needed, the grime-turned-dance MC will surely get the crowd going with his ‘dirty stinkin’ bass’ and surely high-energy performance. Being one of the only UK urban artists to break America, we are proud to see Dizzee as one of the headlining acts on the main stage.

1. WILEY
Pioneer of the grime movement, Wiley is our top pick for Glastonbury 2013’s must-see urban acts. Despite veering slightly into the dance-lane, the MC has always stuck to what he knows best – impeccable flow over fast-paced, vigorous beats with a distinctive flair for creating a catchy, people-friendly track.
