Here at Mixtape Madness, we have long been fans of Obenewa so when the songstress dropped this beautiful heart felt banger, we had to learn more about it!!

Obenewa has shared a new track, ‘Save Me’ produced by Ninja Tune’s Machinedrum (Azealia Banks). The new tune follows previous single releases ‘Marshmallow’, ‘He’ and ‘Solid Gold’, all issued through Kieron McIntosh’s (Plan B, Paloma Faith) new Wunderkind imprint, and due to be drawn together in an EP release this October. The new release follows slots for Obenewa singing back up for the likes of Rosie Lowe and Plan B (also contributing on two tracks from the #1 album iLL Manors) plus radio support across BBC Radio 1 & 1 Xtra and a spot on the Gilles Peterson-curated Brownswood Bubblers compilation.

A long-time hero of Obenewa’s, the involvement of Machinedrum in ‘Save Me’ came about when the American producer visited London to write with Obenewa’s close friend Rosie Lowe. Having heard Obenewa’s original a cappella sketch for the song, Machinedrum came onboard to contribute the track’s steadily ratcheting beats, which flesh out around her multi-tracked vocals. Speaking about the collaboration, Obenewa says; “Machinedrum heard the a cappella, so we sent him over the parts and he did his incredible production magic to it. Save Me, is a song I wrote about my self doubt and my over-thinking my personal life, and Machinedrum’s lively 808s perfectly offset this”. Watch out for our Obenewa interview coming soon…
