The West London singer-songwriter returned home for an intimate one-night-only performance at Bush Hall, marking the final show in Spotify’s inaugural Hometown series.
If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to step inside an exclusive Spotify event, you’ll know that these evenings always feel remarkably special. Tonight is no different. The third and final instalment of their Hometown series, beabadoobee this evening, makes her homecoming to Shepherds Bush in West London, just hours before the release of her brand new album Pylon, already critically acclaimed in the early post-embargo reviews.
While bar decor rarely commands much attention at live events, the venue tonight is curated with warmth and detail. Framed portraits of beabadoobee adorned either side of the bar, complemented by a Spotify Hometown photography backdrop stationed directly opposite, add a fittingly personal touch to a venue sitting right on her home turf.
As golden chandeliers twinkle and Spotify cameras stand ready on either side of the stage, beabadoobee and her band step out to rapturous applause, welcomed by a room of die-hard fans from her top 1% of listeners, all invited to the 400-capacity Bush Hall venue just 24 hours earlier.
With a powerful confidence and euphoric charisma, bea emphatically captivates the audience with an hour-long set spanning across her whole discography, performing a plethora of fan favourites as well as some new tracks from Pylon.
The new songs in Pylon’s live set feel truly special – tracks tailor-made for an intimate room like this, with dark, wailing electric guitars, crashing drums, and Bea’s dynamic vocals reverberating off the four walls of Bush Hall. Intertwining new tracks with older favourites offers a real-time look at her artistic evolution. Pylon’s richer production seamlessly bridges raw, distorted alt-rock aggression with her signature sweet melodies, a far more layered and grungy sound than her earlier discography.
‘In Motion’ effortlessly captures her signature sound, offering a nostalgic nod to 2022-era beabadoobee but met with a blend of heavy grunge, riot grrrl energy, and post-punk rock, whilst ‘Sun Has Set’ picks up the tempo, building towards a soaring climax.
Meanwhile, ‘Radio’ leans into early-2000s nostalgia. Opening with the line “burnt out, stressed out,” it channels classic Avril Lavigne yet reimagined against a wall of heavy, driving guitars reminiscent of IDLES and Turnstile. Every track is delivered with noticeable euphoria and contentment, fueled, no doubt, by the thrill of her new record dropping in less than two hours.
Though despite the excitement and beauty of hearing the Pylon tracks live on the evening of launch, we’re transported back in time to hear older staples such as ‘the perfect pair’, ‘Apple Cider’ and ‘She Plays Bass’, which go down a treat with the hard-cores culminated with posters and signs at the front of the crowd.
In a quiet moment of stillness, beabadoobee addresses the room, reflecting on her path to date and life in her twenties:“That’s just how life goes all the time. It’s confusing and painful. Growing up just means to fuck up and figure it out all the time“.
It’s a moment of honesty that much of the mid-twenties crowd across the room can relate to in many respects.
beabadoobee closes her special Hometown set with ‘Beaches’ from 2024’s This Is How Tomorrow Moves, before hugging her band and exiting the stage, just an hour and a half to go until the release of Pylon – a stunningly captivating set testament to her artistic growth that was amplified by the excitement of the occasion and release ahead.
Earlier on in the same day, Bea joined a small group of young musicians from The Avenues’ Releasement and Mic Drop programmes for an intimate songwriting workshop, listening to tracks the young artists had been working on and sharing her global experiences as an artist, giving back in her hometown.
beabadoobee’s West London upbringing has continued to inspire her music and creative vision throughout her career, and so through Hometown, Spotify sought to celebrate that relationship by bringing bea back to the community where her musical journey began, connecting her with the fans and young creatives who are part of its story today.
beabadoobee’s performance at Bush Hall was also captured on film and will become an exclusive Spotify concert film, giving fans around the world the opportunity to experience her West London homecoming. The film will premiere exclusively on Spotify in the coming weeks.
