RECESSLAND: For Kids Over 21
5 Jun 2025
Black British culture, community, and music descended upon Dreamland in the seaside town of Margate over the bank holiday weekend for Recessland, an electrifying festival expanded to a 2-day format for the first time this year, featuring an eclectic line-up of artists and DJs across genres like afrobeats, dancehall, hip-hop, and amapiano.

Beyond the music, Recessland transformed Dreamland into a vibrant playground. Attendees enjoyed amusement rides, roller skating, a diverse food market, and more, meaning there was always something to do and always something to pique your interest. The event also showcased community initiatives and collaborations emphasising its commitment to cultural enrichment, from haircare to apparel and accessories.

Heavy hitters took the stage all weekend, from afrobeats star Shallipopi and Dancehall star Valiant to cult UK favourites NSG putting together an afroswing all-star set titled ‘Make Afroswing Great Again’ including some names and performances that transported you right back to secondary school and the golden era of the genre. The seaside environment made it reminiscent of a school trip infused with adult energy, a nostalgic and contemporary atmosphere that cultivated joy and inclusion.

An updated transport timetable with later running train services even allowed for everyone to travel home as safely as they’d arrived, combating logistical issues that pulled away from the positives of previous iterations of the event.
Overall, Recessland solidified its status as a cornerstone in the UK’s cultural festival landscape, offering a unique blend of music, community, and celebration. So if you didn’t get the chance to attend this year, pencil next year into your diary from now.
