Becoming the first ever artist to headline back to back dates at All Points East festival, Tyler, The Creator delivered a scintillating performance, scouring his discography whilst also championing his most recent music. This is an artist who takes his craft seriously, stunning his audience with his stage presence, set design, and choreography.
With Tyler continually making reference to the somewhat subpar crowd on the Friday night of his two day stint, Saturday’s crowd delivered from the off, instantly getting into the spirit after opening tracks ‘Big Poe’ and ‘Chroma’. The opening segments of his show leaned heavily into his most recent records, ‘CHROMAKOPIA’ and ‘DON’T TAP THE GLASS’, with standout tracks ‘Sticky’ and ‘Sugar On My Tongue’ rapidly becoming fan favourites.
It was clear that Tyler took the mantle of headline act seriously, leaving everything on the stage thanks to his larger than life dance moves and unbounded energy. This was amped up by the arrival of A$AP Rocky, who whipped the crowd into a frenzy during his guest appearance on ‘Who Dat Boy’. Elsewhere, Rex Orange County took to the stage for ‘Boredom’, offering up a brief respite from the chaotic energy.
What became apparent throughout the set was the breadth of hits across Tyler’s career. His longevity can at times be overlooked thanks to his youthful exuberance, but tracks like ‘She’, ‘IFHY’, all the way through to ‘ARE WE STILL FRIENDS’ are demonstrative of the legacy he is in the midst of creating.
Elsewhere, Baby Keem tore up the West Stage with his inimitable lyric forward, high energy delivery. Daniel Caesar also tempered the crowd before the arrival of Tyler, The Creator’s closing set, offering up effortless harmonies with the help of a gospel choir.
UK fan favourites Natanya, Jim Legxacy, and ledbyher also proved that the talent coming through in our scene can rival any other place in the world. Jim in particular drew a huge crowd at what he said was his first ever time at a festival, showing great poise against a nostalgic, BBM inspired backdrop.
Mercury Prize nominated artist Dove Ellis also shone through his emotive vocals on the X stage, demonstrating why he is so hotly tipped for stardom. In terms of artistic performances and a curated lineup, Saturday’s All Points East could not have been much better.
