On Saturday 12th September, Nemzzz returned to Manchester for an intimate homecoming performance at Concept Haus, as part of Spotify’s Hometown series, celebrating the places, people and communities that shape artists long before the rest of the world discovers them.
Alongside filming the live performance, Spotify commissioned a mini-documentary exploring Nemzzz’s relationship with his home city, directed by the acclaimed production duo Don Prod. Featuring striking visual textures blending Kodak Portra 400 analogue cutscenes with crisp modern high-definition footage, the short film is a window into Nemzzz’ roots. Speaking to Mixtape Madness, the duo offer some insight into the making of the film.
Having developed a close creative partnership with Nemzzz over the years, Don Prod were the perfect candidate to helm the project. “At this point, we must have shot about 20 music videos for Nemzzz” they say, “so getting an opportunity to shoot with Nemzzz in a different capacity was certainly an interesting challenge for us”.

The documentary follows Nemzzz as he travels around Gorton, the neighbourhood where he was raised, capturing a reflective journey through his past. “Travelling around Gorton, going to locations that we’ve shot music videos at ourselves, and he’s filmed at before, was almost nostalgic for us – it was certainly nostalgic for him, and it was very interesting to hear that come out of him as it’s a side we don’t usually get to see”.
Encouraging the rapper to return to his roots allowed for more intimate, stripped-back conversations, which the production duo managed to capture effortlessly.

“We got to meet Nemzzz’s dad, which actually turned out to be the part that stuck with us the most” they share. “Hearing about Nemzzz’s upbringing and the environment that he grew up in, and how that shaped him as a person… that’s a side of Nemzzz that we hadn’t seen before, despite all the times we’ve worked with him”.
“We certainly got a lot out of the project”, they add. “I hope that the fans can get a lot out of it too, and learn something new about Nemzzz and his process and where he’s come from.”

The main Spotify Hometown Manchester performance followed a special community event with Youth Elements in Gorton on Friday 11th September as part of Spotify Hometown, a Manchester-based youth centre dedicated to giving young people a space to grow, connect and thrive.
