North London’s ambient rap architect 8SZN has released his long-awaited second mixtape 888, a body of work two years in the making that captures the full scope of his genre experimentation, emotional precision, and forward-thinking approach to hip-hop.

888 is less a follow-up and more a recalibration, a statement of intent from an artist comfortable operating ahead of the curve and outside the confines of a content-led musical era. It 888 draws from ambient rap, electronic minimalism, dance music, and traditional hip-hop frameworks, moving fluidly between styles without settling into any one lane. It’s a mixtape built on contrast: space and pressure, movement and stillness, clarity and distortion.

Tracks like the introspective “iMight” and the explosive, club-adjacent “UP!” anchor the project’s emotional range, from quiet internal dialogue to disorienting, high-energy release. Across 888, 8SZN treats genre as texture rather than limitation, using negative space, unconventional song structures, and restrained delivery to let atmosphere carry as much weight as bars.

Lyrically, 888 feels observational rather than declarative. There’s no rush to explain or overstate, instead 8SZN documents thought patterns, complex realisations, and the tension between ambition and patience. It’s music that rewards attention, designed for both solitary headphone listening and immersive live environments.

This tape is about trusting instinct,” 8SZN explains. “I stopped trying to make songs for moments and started making music that reflected where my head was actually at. 888 is me letting things exist without forcing them.”
