Bonnie Freechild Revives 90s Romance with Soulful New Single “1993”
11 Nov 2025
UK artist Bonnie Freechild makes a heartfelt return with “1993”, a lush R&B track that blends vintage soul with contemporary sophistication. A glowing homage to the golden era of love songs, the single showcases Bonnie’s own modern, velvety style.
Opening with soft piano chords, shimmering strings, and dreamlike textures, “1993” eases into a smooth, percussive rhythm that frames Freechild’s rich, buttery vocals. Lyrics such as “love me like we’re stuck in 1993” and “rollerskates holding hands in the summer, mixtapes made just for your lover” evoke the sweetness of old-school romance, when love was tender, intentional, and beautifully vulnerable.
Co-written with producer and artist Kwest, “1993” takes inspiration from a foundational year in R&B, echoing the timeless sounds of SWV’s “Weak,” Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover,” Janet Jackson’s “That’s the Way Love Goes,” and Toni Braxton’s “Breathe Again.” The track’s lush soundscape and sultry vocal performance pay tribute to those classics while staying grounded in today’s pop-R&B sensibilities.
“I just want to be loved like they loved in ’90s R&B,” Bonnie shares. “That raw, simple, passionate romance the videos were romantic, the lyrics emotionally intelligent, the melodies silky and smooth. I wanted to write something that feels like being wrapped in nostalgia but still makes you move.” With its sexy slow-wind breakdown and “rose-petal energy,” “1993” delivers an antidote to modern dating’s chaos and a reminder of when love was honest and real.
Freechild’s artistic journey is as impressive as it is heartfelt. She has performed at the BBC Proms, was a finalist in BBC 1XTRA’s Performing Arts Fund, and has had her music featured across TV and radio in Southeast Asia. With “1993,” she cements her place as one of the UK’s most compelling emerging voices in contemporary R&B.
The spirit of authenticity runs through every part of the release from its upcoming music video filmed in a vintage car garage to her DIY creative collaborations. Bonnie will celebrate the single with live performances at Go East Vintage Market and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, tying music, food, and community together. With “1993” leading the way and her debut EP set for release this December, Bonnie Freechild is building a world of intimacy, nostalgia, and fearless self-expression.
