IN TALKS WITH SWN – “TAKE ME BACK TO THE BEGINNING”

Having just released visuals for new single “Tropicana”, SWN has emerged as a one to watch for the coming months. Already established as a talented and experienced producer working with the likes of Krept and Konan, Unknown T and Loski, SWN has taken his career to the artistry side of things as well – and we caught up with him recently to discuss all things music. Get to know SWN below :

“Take me back to the beginning – what introduced you to music?”

I feel like music was already around me from young – my earliest memories of music would probably be singing songs in the car with my mum or dad, you get me? Music has just always been around, I’ve been surrounded by it for a long time. I feel secretly I was always going to make music.

“How old were you when you started making music?”

I was around 9 or 10 when I started writing raps. Obviously I weren’t going brazy but I was writing raps.

“What age did you start the production side of the things?”

That was when I was about 13 or 14. That was secondary school – I’d go go home and watch videos of people making beats – shoutout Mike Columbo by the way. I remember thinking this is so cool and thinking, this is how they make it yeah? I followed it on from then.

“You’ve just started exploring the avenue of being an artist – however you started with the production. What’s your creative process like?”

I live life and I just stay in the studio for the rest of it. All my songs are based on something that has happened in my life. I go through something and then talk about it on a track – thats my creative process.

“Bars then beats or beat then bars?”

Always the beat first bro – the beat tells me what to do.

“Do you have a dream collaboration?”

I swear down man I’m crazy I wanna work with everyone haha. My dream collab though would be Mike Posner. And you know Mike Skinner, from The Streets? So imagine me and Mike Posner produce a beat – then Mike Skinner gets on the track as well. Would be so sick.

“In terms of production, are you evenly investing time into producing for other artists – or has your artistry forced a split between the two?”

Nah man, it’s still kinda balanced. Obviously the artist stuff I’m slightly leaning towards. I live in a studio bro so I don’t really do anything else. It’s not anything different for me.

“Do you have a favourite song you have produced?”

Aye this is gonna get me. It’s a tough question you know.

“Okay, okay. Let me change the question. How about the top 2 songs you’ve produced?”

I’m trynna go through the ones that are out. Loski Daily Duppy is defo one bro. That’s one of my favourites – if I’m in the car bro I wanna listen to that. And the second song – 9th Street She Say. Cold, cold, cold.

“Cold, I rate that. Back to the artistry again – how did Tropicana come about?”

See that song yeah – that was one of the weirdest songs I’ve ever made. I’d just come out of my break up – I’d been in a relationship for 4/5 years. I remember I was feeling a weird way, in a weird mood. Everyone had left the room and it was just me and one producer – we did the whole song basically in one session. When I had recorded it everyone left and as soon as they heard the song being played they all shot back into the room and got lit.

“It’s a hard song you know. You posted a snippet of you and Dappy on your instagram – do you have something on the way?”

We do, we do. We’ve got something coming very soon. I don’t wanna give away too much.

“What else can we expect to see from you this year?”

It’s October now – I think we should have another couple videos coming out this year.
