Welsh rapper, singer and songwriter, Luke RV has dropped his 8-track EP, ‘WHATS THAT, over there’. Accompanying the release is a video for lead single, ‘100 MOMENTS’ filmed in a stylish one-take shoot, shot and directed by fellow Welsh rapper, Kiddus. ‘WHATS THAT, over there’ is
a contemplative project showcasing Luke’s versatility as he raps and sings over smooth production courtesy of his close-knit group of friends from his native, Kiddus, Minas, and Kaspuh.
The poignant project shows Luke reflecting on his personal success and growth and the production perfectly blends with his lyrics creating his own distinctive sound. Working with friends allows Luke to pen unguarded and reflective lyrics as they encourage him to be open about his personal journey in music and life.
When speaking about the project Luke said:
‘WHAT’S THAT, over there’ is a bit of an oxymoron to me. In terms of the title and the themes. My last big project was ‘Going Nowhere’, and I wanted to sort of reflect on my journey since then. That project alluded to the idea that you can accomplish lots, but still remain in the same place. With this project I wanted to convey that I am growing as an artist and as a person. ‘WHAT’S THAT, over there’ can seem on the surface as curiosity – being open to other things around you. But it also can be a precursor for the grass is always greener. The idea that things look better the further they are from you. I think that bittersweet theme is quite consistent throughout my songwriting on this project. Trying to find the sweet spot between my optimism and nihilism.’
Luke’s mission of breaking into the burgeoning alternative Hip-Hop scene dates back to 2017. Born and raised in South Wales – specifically the valleys of Neath – the obstacle of bridging the gap between Wales and London contributed to the feeling of isolation and in some ways held him back over the years. Solely focused on fulfilling his purpose as a musician, inner conflict from people in his life has only fuelled Luke to continue pursuing what he had already started. His meditative voice and production hones in on relatable issues, allowing him to connect with his fanbase and create his own unique style of melancholic Hip-Hop.
As he continues to flourish and generate a fanbase far beyond Wales, Luke’s musical journey is progressing at a rapid rate. Following the success of ‘LONG TERM PARKING’ which was supported on BBC 1xtra and was also picked as BBC Introducing Track of The Week by Lady Leshurr, Luke is announcing himself on the thriving alternative rap scene. This year Luke has gone onto have some notable highlights including performing alongside; London singer/songwriter Murkage Dave, rising rapper, Bawo, and being featured on BBC 1xtra’s introducing rap cypher. Luke’s mission to get himself heard beyond Wales is clearly underway, with this project he continues to demonstrate a self-reflective maturity and unique sound that cannot be ignored.
