‘Instructions’ by Mahalia: A Playful Celebration of Control and Joy!
20 Jul 2025
Can I just say how much I’m feeling Mahalia’s new dancehall single Instructions? It dropped on July 11, and honestly, it sounds like the perfect night out. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to dance and just be in the moment. After her May release Different Type of Love with Masicka, this track keeps that playful, confident energy going.
Produced by Malik Ninety Five and Mike Baretz, Instructions has a strong dancehall beat that stays with you. Mahalia’s voice feels natural and easy over the rhythm. I imagine this playing in a small club with close friends, where the music speaks for itself.
The video, directed by Douglas Reddan, matches the feeling well. It’s set in a low-lit club with friends, warm lighting, and an easy, fun energy. The colours and camera work pull you into the scene, making you feel like part of the night.
Mahalia shares what inspired Instructions: “I’ve been dancing a lot recently, just enjoying the feeling of a really great night out. Instructions is everything I feel on those nights put into song. I always wanted to make a record that told people exactly what to do, and now I have it.” There’s honesty there this song is about enjoying the night and taking control of the moment.
This fits with her current Luvergirl era. Mahalia talks about taking back control and not being held back by shame or judgment. She says, “Even in the moments where I may seem like I’m out of control, I’m still in control.” That mix of confidence and fun runs through her music right now.
It’s been a big year for Mahalia so far. She headlined Little Simz’s Meltdown Festival, performed at GQ’s Music & Style dinner, and keeps supporting new artists through her Mahalia Presents shows. You can listen to Instructions and more on her official site.
After more than ten years making music with MOBO awards, BRIT nominations, a Grammy nod, and support from artists like Ed Sheeran and Adele Mahalia feels like she’s in a new phase. She’s always sung about love, but now she’s letting the fun and lightness of it come through more.
“I love love,” she says. “But lately I’ve been leaning into the fun, unserious side of it. The world feels heavy, and I want my music to be a space where people can find joy.”
Instructions isn’t just a song. It’s an invite to move, to enjoy, and to feel alive. Right now, that feels exactly right.
