Today, Marcus Rashford released an open letter directed at the Government to reverse their decision to stop providing free school vouchers during the summer.

During this Coronavirus lockdown period, Marcus Rashford partnered with FareShare UK and raised over £20 million; in doing so the footballer was able to give over 3 million vulnerable people free meals.

Taking to Twitter, he posted the letter with the following caption; “An Open Letter to all MPs in Parliament… #maketheUturn. Please retweet and tag your local MPs”.

At the start of lockdown back in March, the government introduced a food voucher scheme which enabled vulnerable children free school meals – 1.3 million people were eligible. However, the Government have now stated that this scheme will not carry on during the summer. Following this announcement, Marcus Rashford penned together this open letter urging them to reverse this decision.

Touching on his background growing up, he stated “The system was not built for families like mine to succeed, regardless of how hard my mum worked.”

Rashford has urged the Government to make the U-turn and make protecting the lives of some of our most vulnerable a top priority” was “not about politics” but instead about “humanity”.

The footballer then went onto say that this is about “looking at ourselves in the mirror and feeling like we did everything we could to protect those who can’t, for whatever reason or circumstance, protect themselves”.
