REVIEW: UK Afrobeat sensation Darkoo taps Tion Wayne, Gabzy, Unknown T And More For Debut EP ‘2 In 1’
16 Jul 2021
Constantly reaching new milestones, UK afrobeat sensation Darkoo sets pace with the release of her highly anticipated ‘2 in 1’ EP. Breaking in to the scene with explosive single ‘Gangsta’ featuring One Acen achieving her first ever top 40, was memorably followed by her highly admired drill-infused feature on Russ x Tion Wayne – ‘Body Remix’. At just 19 years old, the rising star has succeeded co-signs from huge names in the UK scene such as Wretch 32, and NSG.
The infectious 7 track EP sheds light on Darkoo’s personality, expressing her individualism throughout the project. Darkoo’s debut EP represents the homage she pays to her African and UK roots and her ability to switch from sounds of Afroswing to Rap and even drill! Expressing an available, emotional side to herself on tracks like “Oti Bere”, “Pick Up” and “Slow Down”, are all songs you can undeniably catch a vibe to, with an extremely laid back feel implementing the cultural influence involved in her music. Track 7 “Come Up” is potentially the most versatile song on the project as Darkoo once again exceeds her levels of comfortability, tapping drill rapper Unknown T for a hard-hitting collab. This further explains the concept behind ‘2 in 1’ and the desire for Darkoo to show both sides of her persona.
‘She Like’ featuring Blanco is undeniably a standout song for the summer. In an almost post-covid season where the sun’s out, this track already has audiences by the ear. Darkoo’s ability to create catchy, feel-good songs is evident and she continues to showcase this on the EP.
Talking on her personality in context of the EP, Darkoo says “I do what I want to do. I could wear a wig and make up and still wear a tracksuit, today i want to do this tomorrow i want to do that my music reflects my style and vice versa. Everything i do has an element of 2 in 1 in it”.
‘2 in 1’ is an EP which will be enjoyed by a variety of audiences without a doubt! The mixture of UK and Nigerian influence stands out through Darkoo’s genuine self-expression and transparency throughout. With a succinct beat selection, Darkoo’s artistry has evidently developed overtime.
