NYC-based multidisciplinary artist suhREEtah has come through with her self-produced mixtape, ‘Also &!’. The five track project explores themes of neurodivergence, heritage, and self-authorship.
Despite being in the infancy of her musical career, suhREEtah has already earned praise from the likes of Labrinth, Willow Smith and Questlove. There are far more strings to her bow than this hotly anticipated release however, also showing her skills as a poet, playwright, and performance artist.
Speaking on Also &!, the artist states:
“This project is truly about multiplicity. There are so many different sonic worlds moving through me, and they all deserve
their credit, they all deserve their moment in the sun. My neurodivergence influences my sound, as does my Affrilachian heritage, my sonic tastes, my heartbreaks, my triumphs an’ everything in between–all of it encompasses who I am today.”
“The title is meant to indicate an ongoing conversation. “And” is a conjunction. The word “also” is a conjunctive adverb. It’s gettin’ real grammatical up in here, but let me cook. The words “also, and” are meant to connect ideas, subjects, themes. So, for a project that’s all about showcasing my multiplicity, it made sense.”
“My creative process is rooted in my neurodivergence, of course. I’m a woman moving through the world in 8K, and to be gifted the ability to experience the full breadth and depth of your humanity? I mean, my god. It’s gorgeous. It’s terrifying. My way into music composition and production, specifically, is through vocal stimming. Vocal stimming refers to self-stimulatory behaviours involving the mouth, lips or vocal cords – often used by neurodivergent folks to regulate emotions, manage sensory input, or self-soothe. It’s a meditative practice for me. I also view it as an art form in and of itself. It has its own inherent beauty.”
