Mimi’s ‘Thank You’ Is What Music Media’s Been Missing
20 Jun 2025
There’s something so real about Mimi’s story. Just a WordPress blog called Music With M, started in her London bedroom, and a love for music so deep she couldn’t stop writing about it
Over time that laid the foundation for what’s now a growing body of work defined by honesty and intention. Connecting with the very artists she once only wrote about from afar – SZA, Little Simz, Naomi Campbell, Will Smith. These conversations happened because people recognised her voice as something real. Something that connected. She built a space where she could speak freely, without pretence, and explore conversations that often go untouched.
Her new YouTube series, Thank You, continues that mission. In many ways, it’s a love letter to Black women who build quietly and powerfully, often without the spotlight they deserve. The show gives them their flowers in real time. It’s about legacy, resilience, and the grind of staying visible in an industry that can be quick to overlook or burn out its talent. Thank You isn’t just about visibility – it’s about rewriting what recognition looks like.
The series was born from Mimi’s viral TikTok series “Thank You,” and expanded from her powerful Clash Magazine article of the same name, where she celebrated Black women in media who are building, shaping, and influencing culture behind the scenes. The YouTube version builds on that same energy – intimate, honest, and rooted in deep respect for the work these women do.
The first episode features none other than Ciara. And what makes it so refreshing is the tone throughout the conversation. Warm, grounded, and focused on the music. Mimi comes prepared not just with questions, but with genuine curiosity. She creates a space where Ciara can reflect, unpack her process, and share stories that rarely get airtime.
The Cuts Over Charts segment, where Mimi shares her personal picks from Ciara’s discography – not necessarily the hits, but the deep cuts that mean something to her. It’s relaxed, like friends trading playlists, but it also shows how deeply Mimi connects with the music. That kind of attention to detail encourages her guests to go deeper too. Ciara, who tends to keep a lot private, seems at ease and maybe that’s because Mimi creates a space where artists don’t need to perform.
A lot of viewers echoed what I felt: this was the kind of interview that centres the art. It’s rare to see someone so committed to creating a safe, thoughtful, and genuinely curious space. Mimi respects her guests’ time and stories, and it shows in how she composes and delivers her questions, how she listens, and how she holds the conversation.
If this first episode is anything to go by, Thank You is more than a show – it’s a shift. A new space in music media that prioritises authenticity, gives overdue flowers, and reminds us why deep conversation still matters.
I can’t wait for episode two.
