Two thriving icons at the centre of US music scene, both prospering in the relative paths – R&B star Summer Walker enlists rap artist JT from established group City Girls for visuals to new anthem “Ex For A Reason”.
Switching up her much-loved style of music, Summer Walker taps in to the field of upbeat R&B songs reminiscent of the early 2000’s with production by Sean Garnett, Buddah Bless and BoobieRobinson. Incorporating smooth vocals on the instantly-catchy hook, accompanied by a soothing verse to follow – Summer lays down a base for the track with an abundance of melodies. Potentially overlooked by many, this track unknowingly made a statement for many predominantly R&B artists stuck to the “mellow” sound, proven by Summer that there is undeniably more than one way of execution. Although this not may be Summer’s preferred sound, the versatility explored on “Ex For A Reason” introduces her to many more, wider audiences presenting her extensive and evident on-going potential.
Noticeably, the effect of JT’s rap verse adds to the empowering rise of female-orientated music, providing the track with that extra edge. Both artists added significance to this track fulfilling its potential, with new compelling visuals from director – Lacey Duke as Summer Walker leads up to her sophomore album ‘Still Over It’.
