Wretch 32 Collaborates With Little Simz & Benjamin A.D For New Track “Black & British”
28 Oct 2024
North London’s Wretch 32 has returned with a powerful new single, “Black and British”, featuring the equally revered and boundary-breaking Little Simz. Perfectly timed within Black History Month and at once deeply personal yet universal, “Black and British” is a bold and uncompromising statement that delves into the heart of the Black British experience.
Produced by WAVSDNTDIE, “Black and British”, the production stands as low-key and melancholy, with rattling hi-hats providing an eerie texture that adds a layer of tension. The lyrics are introspective, speaking to both individual and collective experiences of marginalisation, heritage, and pride, with Wretch and Simz delivery measured but impactful, their cadence weaving in and out of the instrumentation with a masterful control that underscores the gravity of the subject matter.
Wretch’s Grandmother Beverley Scott is poignantly sampled at the end of the track, taken from the milestone ‘Scenes From The Farm’ Broadwater Farm estate documentary, first televised in 1988. Hotly-tipped Lewisham rapper Benjamin A.D also provides vocal contributions to the track’s chorus-line.
“Sometimes you’re a fly on the wall in your own house or a ear to the wall for your neighbours, both views represent the black British experience” – Wretch 32
“So honoured to be able to join Wretch on this song along with Benjamin A.D. Wretch’s storytelling is unmatched and this song is a true representation of what it means to be black and British” – Little Simz
‘I think Wretch summed it up perfectly. The struggles vs the intention. The craziest thing is the song has been there for a while and now that it’s being released, it feels more relevant than ever’ – Benjamin A.D
