Youngs Teflon’s latest single, ‘Brownin’, is a lesson in layered storytelling, something we see often within rap music.

Produced by Proton, the beat opens with dark pads, ambient vocals, and a low bassline.

On the surface the story presents as a delicate message, under the subtle ‘I Don’t Wanna’ sample by Aaliyah, but if you’re listening closely to Teflon’s bars, we can hear that this is something or someone that is loyal but cold. Always there when it matters. It’s that kind of love. This isn’t just about the girl sitting across from him at the cafe but about something else entirely.

The accompanying visual, directed by Lauren Luxenberg and set in the iconic Top Boy café, amplifies this ambiguity. Teflon is seen sharing a moment with his partner, but the atmosphere is covered with unease. People in the café begin to mimic his lyrics, the woman’s words are conveyed through subtitles, blurring the lines between reality and paranoia. Mirroring the tension between affection and survival.

‘Brownin’ is the second installment in a trilogy of visuals, following ‘Da Gutter,’ and it continues to explore the psychological complexities of Teflon’s world. He’s never had to explain his perspective—he just puts his stories out there for us to piece together. ‘Brownin’ follows that same logic.

And as Keep The Change, dropped recently, listen twice to Brownin. Decide for yourself – is this a love song, or a letter to something else he can’t live without?
