Amsterdam To Ban Tourist From Smoking At Coffee Shops
17 Jan 2021
Amsterdam has been a very popular destination for weed lovers all over the globe, but new plans will now mean if you aren’t a resident of the Dutch capital you won’t get to enjoy the city’s most famous benefit. Part of plans to reduce organised crime, will see a roll back of the relaxed law that fuels the drugs tourism the city is notorious for.
Government research showed 58% of Amsterdam’s foreign tourists came to do the drug. Mayor Fenke Halsema said, “Amsterdam is an international city and we wish to attract tourists – but for its richness, its beauty and its cultural institutions.” The proposed ban could happen as soon as next year and would see the 166 cannabis selling coffee shops in the city be strictly residents only.
The move is supported by the police and prosecutors, but coffee shop owners’ association BCD said the plans will only help to push the market to the street.
