One of the most annoying things about the pandemic has been how useless Apples Face ID has become with everyone wearing mask.

The next update to the iPhone operating system will let owners use a face scan to unlock their handsets even when wearing a mask. The catch is you need to be wearing an Apple Watch Series 3 or later to do so.

In mid-May, Apple released a software update for iPhones that allowed them to recognise when a mask was being worn, and skip straight to requesting a passcode from the user.

The new setting, which must be actively enabled, will reduce the accuracy required for the iPhone to recognise you as the owner. Also the strength of the Bluetooth signal between the phone and watch will be measured, to ensure that they are being held by the same person.
