Berlin has introduced new rules that will allow women to go topless at public swimming pools and bathing facilities.

The policy change was triggered by a successful anti-discrimination complaint filed by a 33-year-old female pool-goer who was kicked out of an open-air pool in the German capital for sunbathing topless.

“The ombudsperson’s office very much welcomes the decision of the Baederbetriebe because it establishes equal rights for all Berliners, whether male, female or non-binary and because it also creates legal certainty for the staff at the Baederbetriebe,” said Doris Liebscher, the head of the ombudsperson’s office.

Germany already has a notoriously relaxed attitude to public nudity which they call  freikörperkultur, or “free body culture”.

Berlin is now the latest of many German cities that allow all people to swim while topless.
