The 2021 Golden Globe ceremony had its turn dealing with pandemic last night, as the red carpet event went from packed out auditorium to laptop screens. The first virtual Golden Globes hosted by Tina Fey & Amy Poehler didn’t lose its shine however with a number of actors and actresses getting their due credit.

Daniel Kaluuya of Skins and Get Out fame picked up the best supporting actor for Judas and the Black Messiah. Kaluuya plays US activist Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Black Panther Party, who was assassinated in 1969 at the age of 21.

“I hope generations after this can see how brilliantly he fought, he spoke, and he loved,” Kaluuya said as he accepted his prize.

“He taught me about myself, made me grow as a man, and I appreciate that with all my heart.”

Not to be outdone by his friend John Boyega got in on the accolades, being named best supporting actor in a limited series for his role in an instalment of Small Axe, Steve McQueen’s landmark series of BBC films.

“I’m so shocked. I’ve got trackie bottoms on and I’m comfortable but this is exciting,” Boyega said.

The late actor Chadwick Boseman posthumously won the best actor (drama) prize for his role as trumpeter Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award on his behalf, saying in an emotional speech: “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing in this moment in history.”
