Kanya King CBE Becomes First Recipient of Young Music Boss x Black Music Coalition Industry Icon Award
10 Jun 2025
A trailblazer, visionary, and cultural force, MOBO Awards founder Kanya King CBE has been honoured as the first-ever recipient of the Industry Icon Award, a new accolade created by Young Music Boss in partnership with the Black Music Coalition. The award recognises game-changers who’ve reshaped the UK music landscape and paved the way for the next generation.
Born in Kilburn to an Irish mother and Ghanaian father, Kanya built the MOBO Awards from her bedroom in 1996 with little more than a vision and unstoppable drive. Nearly 30 years later, MOBO has become one of the UK’s most respected platforms spotlighting Black British talent from Craig David and Ms. Dynamite to Stormzy, Little Simz, and Dave.
The Industry Icon Award is more than a trophy, it’s a symbol of legacy and leadership. By launching this award, YMB and the Black Music Coalition are doubling down on their shared mission to push for a more inclusive and equitable music industry.
Kanya King didn’t just open doors, she kicked them down. Her impact on British music is undeniable, and this moment is a reminder of how belief, vision, and cultural pride can shift the entire game.
Through interviews, media moments, and mentorship programmes, this award aims to continue her legacy, amplifying voices, educating the next wave, and creating real change.
Kanya’s journey proves that breaking barriers can lead to building bridges, and her story is still inspiring what comes next.
