The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton has issued a statement claiming the controversy over her mother’s day post was down to her experimenting with editing.

Rumours have swirled social media after the official Princess of Wales account posted a clearly altered image of Kate surrounded by her three children, the first official picture of the Princess to be released since her mysterious illness and following abdominal surgery in January.

Taking to X (Twitter) the Princess of Wales said: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C”

The statement comes after a number of the world’s largest picture agencies, including PA, AFP, Reuters and AP, decided to withdraw the image from their services due to apparent manipulation.

PA said in a message sent out to media outlets: “This image is being removed from our picture service in the absence of clarification from Kensington Palace on the veracity of the image.”

Royal photographer Ian Lloyd told BBC Breakfast that editing of photos was “not unusual”, saying: “It has gone on in photography, and royal photography particularly, since the dawn of photography.”
