A spider monkey wearing camo and a bulletproof vest was found dead following a bloody cartel shootout in Mexico, reports say.

According to The Mexico Daily Post, The suited up primate belonged to a member of Mexico’s La Familia Michoacana cartel who was also found dead on the scene with several bullet wounds.

Mexico state authorities later confirmed the authenticity of the images circulating the internet as well as the monkey’s death.

“A primate was killed at the scene, which was presumably owned by a criminal who was also killed at the scene,” said state prosecutors in a statement.

“An autopsy will be carried out on the animal by a veterinarian specialised in the species,” the State of Mexico added.

Dubbed ‘El Changusto’ the little fella has become a posthumous hit, with tributes pouring in across social media.

The skirmish saw 11 gang members die and a further seven arrested, with those individuals scheduled to appear in court in the next few days.
