Newborn serial killer nurse Lucy Letby is set to die in jail after being sentenced to life in prison for murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more.
The UK’s most prolific child murderer was given a whole-life order, the most severe punishment available in the country’s criminal justice system.
Letby, 33, was found guilty on Friday by a jury, was handed a whole life order by Manchester Crown Court.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Letby “cowardly” for failing to appear in court saying on Monday that the government “are looking and have been at changing the law to make sure that that happens and that’s something that we’ll bring forward in due course.”
Mr Justice Goss, who sentenced Letby, described her crimes as a “cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children” adding that there was “a deep malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions.”
The judge said she “acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies,”
“There is no doubt that you are intelligent and outwardly were a very conscientious, hardworking, knowledgable nurse – which enabled you to harm babies for some time.”
