Raheem Sterling has firmly captured the heart of the nation with some over zealous fans calling for England to be renamed in his honour if he leads the three lions to Euros victory.
A petition, which was started on Change.org after England’s 2-1 win against Denmark, calls for London Mayor Sadiq Khan to rename the capital ‘Sterlingrad’ if England win the Euros on Sunday night.
Craig Salmon who started the petition said : “To honour Raheem Sterling and the success of the England football team since they adopted Marxism”, a jab aimed at critics like Nigel Farage and Laurence Fox who labelled members of the England squad ‘Marxists’ for taking the knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
The joke was even shared by the British Communist party urging people to “sign the petition”.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who the petition is addressed to, has not yet responded. However Khan has called for a bank emergency bank holiday if England win on Sunday.
