9 May 2021
Sadiq Khan will serve a second term as Mayor after winning the 2021 London Mayoral elections.
Khan who many had as the favourite, beat out Conservative rival Shaun Bailey winning 55.2% of the popular vote, after entering a run-off with Bailey with neither managing to secure a majority in the first round of voting.
Khan speaking after his victory promised “to strain every sinew to help build a better, brighter future for London”.
Khan added : “I will always be a mayor for all Londoners, working to improve the lives of every single person in this city. The results of the elections around the UK shows our country, and even our city, remains deeply divided,”
“The scars of Brexit have yet to heal. A crude culture war is pushing us further apart.”
The other success story of the election was youtube prankster Niko Omilana who managed to secure just under 50,000 real votes. Running a campaign with policies like “Boris Johnson will be forced to shush” and “the price of Fredos will go back to 5p” he snatched up 49,628 or 2% of those who voted.
He also bested Laurence Fox the actor, 42, who set up the Reclaim Party for his election race, who lost his £10,000 deposit for his bid to be London Mayor after getting 1.8% (47,634) of the vote.
