Two men have passed after being attacked by knife-wielding birds before the start of an illegal cockfighting event.

As per the New India Express, the deaths took place during India’s Hindu Makar Sankranti festival, a time at which cockfighting is common in the region.

In a cruel twist of fate one man, Gande Suryapraksha Rao, was killed by his own rooster as he tied blades to the bird’s feet and bled out from a cut to his leg.

Rao was rushed to a local hospital before he was later pronounced dead.

The other man, K. Padmaraju, was a spectator at a different cockfight in the district of East Godavari when the bird flew into the crowd and cut his hand.

According to reports Padmaraju was standing to close to the reckless roosters when one of them flew up and sliced a key nerve in his hand.

Padmaraju bled out on the way to the hospital, where he was later declared dead.

Cockfighting is illegal under India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, however it remains a common event, especially during the Sankranti celebrations.
