UK Set To Ban Buy One Get One Free Promotions
28 Dec 2020
The UK Governments has taken a new target in its war on obesity. The popular “buy one get one free” and “three for two” deals are set to be banned in supermarkets to “help” the nation lose weight. Following up from the infamous 2018 Sugar Tax on sugary drinks the new restrictions will be put in place from April 2022, although smaller stores aren’t included in the ban.
Public Health Minister Jo Churchill said: “We are restricting promotions and introducing a range of measures to make sure the healthy choice is the easy choice”.
The restrictions will only apply to food considered as “Junk” more specifically food high in fat, salt or sugar, such as cakes, crisps, soft drinks, breakfast cereals, pizzas and ready meals. Restaurants will also no longer be allowed to give out free refills of soft drinks when the new rules come into effect.
