Warner Bros announced a 1 year plan which will see blockbuster movies like Wonder Woman: 1984, Dune and Space Jam open on streaming site HBO Max as well as US Cinemas in 2021.

This move is another blow to the cinema industry, who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Most have had to close during the pandemic and the ones that have been running are doing so for a significantly reduced audience.

“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group,” CEO Ann Sarnoff said in a statement.

All 17 of Warner Brothers 2021 releases will be going on HBO Max including The Suicide Squad, Dune, In the Heights, The Matrix 4, Godzilla vs. Kong, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Reminiscence, Malignant, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard and Cry Macho.

Disney also side stepped cinemas for their release of the live action remake of Mulan which went straight onto their Disney+ Streaming service earlier this year.

Unfortunately unlike Disney+, HBO Max isn’t currently available in the UK however this could be sign of things to come for the global cinema industry.
