WhatsApp is in big trouble after its latest terms update saw the personal messenger company lose millions of users.

The exodus came after misinformation claiming the update would give the Facebook owned app the right to read users’ messages and hand the information over to its parent company. In hilarious irony the app was one of the main conduits for the bad information spreading.

Niamh Sweeney, WhatsApp’s director of public policy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa said: “There are no changes to our data sharing with Facebook anywhere in the world. We want to be clear that the policy update does not affect the privacy of your messages with friends or family in any way.”

The bad reaction has seen many leave for rivals Telegram and Signal, forcing WhatsApp delay the implementation of the new terms until May of this year.
