With countless sold-out shows across the UK, EU and US, the highly acclaimed duo Maribou State touched down on the South Coast last night for a highly anticipated evening of music at Brighton’s Chalk.

Following in the same fashion as their previous tour five years ago, the event sold out in rapid time, an accurate reflection of the demand for not only the event but the return of Maribou in the live events space. It marked a very special occasion, in fact, their first live show in five years, with only Liam filling in the gaps doing DJ sets around the country.

In association with resident music, Maribou State brought along their full band, vocalist Tallulah Ruby. The club and live music venue in Brighton is home to a great sound system, intimate stage area and electric atmosphere, the perfect shelter for Maribou’s ethereal soundscapes.

The intricate hybridisation of their more renowned ‘chill’ electronic sounds weaved with a couple of heavier, bass-filled drops, made the perfect dynamic for a set. Experimenting with both new sound creations and a selection of their older discography, it was hard to narrow down to a favourite moment due to it all being so good. However, their performances of their tracks from “Kingdoms In Colour” such as “Glasshouses”, and “Midas” from “Portraits” had the crowd infused at every note.

It was evident from their full-length ninety-minute set that their comeback was not only a special moment for the audience, but for them as individuals also. Their new music previewed offered a window of discovery into their creations over their hiatus, an exciting taster of what’s to come when their new album releases at the start of next year.

Their live performances are simply a masterclass in blending organic and electronic elements, creating an immersive soundscape that resonates deeply with audiences. Their set was a vibrant mix of lush instrumentation, soulful vocals, and textured beats, seamlessly weaving together a mixture of instruments, successfully offloading a rich, human touch that felt both intimate and expansive, atmospheric and euphoric throughout.

Maribou State’s innovative and unique sound is something that can’t be replicated – they are the best in the business. It’s been just over five years since they put on their sold-out shows at the O2 Academy in Brixton with a full live band; now, having sold out three Alexandra Palace dates in the new year, the horizon looks extremely positive for the duo yet again, something the music world has been missing over the past half-decade.

Resident Music once again proved its value to the South Coast, outdoing itself with another amazing event, with the reputable record shop always going above and beyond to get the finest talent from around the world booked in Brighton.
