Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal Explores True Crime Story In The World of UK Rap
1 May 2026
Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal, has landed on HBO Max to critical acclaim. The true crime story documents a recording studio in Edmonton, and displays the blurred lines of the law in the UK and how those wanting to use music as an escape can end up ensnared.
Teens involved in petty crime came to Boom Box to keep off the streets, seeking out the recording studio as a way to get their break in the industry. Instead, the studio became a destination for gang activity, but this is not the twist that is gripping viewers.
Those running the studio were undercover police officers, who had targeted North London after a rise in murders in 2008. The series calls into question the ethics of the police, and whether these young, impressionable teenagers would have been involved in gang violence if it weren’t for the manipulation of the police running Boombox.
With the Guardian describing the show as ‘astonishing’, there is no doubting the impact that this true drama can have, displaying a fractured relationship between police and community. Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal, is available to stream now on HBO Max.
