Friday night marked a very special occasion for Joy Crookes, shining bright at a special one-off show at the Tate Modern, celebrating the release of her brand new album ‘Juniper’.

Crookes’ music on the new album engages with themes of migration, memory and place, and is partly inspired by the connection to the work of artist Do Ho Suh, whose major solo exhibition, The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh: Walk the House, has been drawing crowds to Tate Modern throughout the summer.

Playing the South Tanks in the Blavatnik Building at the world-famous London gallery, she guided the audience through a carefully curated selection of tracks from her new album, such as ‘Mathematics’, ‘I Know You’d Kill’ and ‘Perfect Crime’ as well as a couple of her biggest hits from ‘Skin’, ‘When You Were Mine’ and ‘Feet Don’t Fail Me Now’.

Reminding the crowd halfway through the set just how special it is to share her art in a venue that has provided creative and artistic inspiration for her over the years, the night felt extremely warming, intimate and celebratory.

The new album is brilliant. Joy Crookes live is just as brilliant.

Speaking before the event, she says: “I feel honoured to be performing at the Tate Modern Late this September. Tate has always been a vital place for me growing up in London – it has the ability to draw out so many emotions in me, and in all Londoners. My songwriting wouldn’t be what it is, if I didn’t explore the theme of place. As a huge fan of Do Ho Suh, to be taking part in this Late in the context of his exhibition is a massive privilege. The themes of home and identity cross over so much in our creative work and I’m excited to share these with audiences for the first time.”
