KING KAY Unveils ‘TOO DEEP’ Music Video
9 Feb 2018
Taken from his critically acclaimed Winner’s Winter mixtape, which was championed by The FADER, Complex, MTV UK, Revolt TV, DJ Booth, Radar Radio, MOBO Awards, and Rinse FM, among others, North London rapper and producer is proud to unveil the music video for his fan-favourite rework of the dvsn cut of the same name, ‘Too Deep’, as premiered via GRM Daily.
Released on the back of the recent announcement that he has been longlisted for two awards – Best Male Solo Act and Best Urban Act – at the Unsigned Music Awards, which will be opening The Great Escape festival this year, the visuals for ‘Too Deep’ sees King Kay collaborating with acclaimed director Dir. Lx, who has previously worked with the likes of J Hus, Dave, and AJ Tracey.
Driven by his jazz and soul roots, and his fresh twist to a classic Hip Hop sound, King Kay turns the dvsn classic on its head, and completely transforms the sultry R&B jam into his own rap confessional, packed with piercing, compelling and hard-hitting lyrics about the current state of music and his position within it, while still offering a glimpse of a softer side, with veiled messages to a significant other.
Speaking about his inspiration for ‘Too Deep’, King Kay says, “I’ve always been a big DVSN fan, and as soon as I heard the track I knew I had to do my own take. I also wanted rework it such that it feels like a completely new song. The lyrics kinda jump between me sweet-talking a significant other, and also me venting about how I get slept on. I think we can all relate to something on this record”.
About how the visuals came together, he says, “For the video I linked up with the bro Lx to create a very clean, aesthetically pleasing visual. I take pride in the fact that my visuals aren’t like all the other videos you see out there. I like my videos to give you a very classy, high class feel which is evident from the choice of location to the colour grading, and I feel it adds a new layer to the record, as well”.
