Today, multifaceted London artist and ESSIE GANG founder Octavian releases his new single Poison.
The new track follows the Latin-tinged Papi Chulo; a collaboration with fellow innovator and brother in arms Skepta that blew up commercially. Poison, produced by Take A Daytrip, the duo behind Sheck Wes’ Mo Bamba and Lil Nas X’s Panini among a host of crossover anthems, is a celebration of Octavian’s African heritage, inspired by a recent trip to Nigeria where he reconnected and fell in love with the country and is set to become the rapper’s next big cultural moment.
Octavian’s Nigerian trip led to his collaboration with Obongjayar and Santi – two of the country’s most celebrated new artists – on an Afrobeats inspired track that’s a perfect summation of Octavian’s artistic duality; a track that feels narcotic and hallucinogenic but is also one of the rapper’s most mass-appealing and accessible songs to date.
