Review: Poundz Delivers His Energetic ‘No Smoke Without Fire’ Mixtape

He’s already secured a number of big hits under his belt so it comes as no surprise that South London’s rising superstar Poundz, is cementing his position on the Drill scene with the delivery of an energetic debut mixtape ‘No Smoke Without Fire.’

Earlier this month, the artist presented visuals for the infectious ‘Get Rich N Get Paid’, directly lifted from the project, and this evidently served as a big hint to the kind of vibe he would be presenting to his audience with this release.

Much like the diverse musical nature in the song he used for the Tape’s rollout (‘Get Rich N Get Paid’), ‘Pull Up and Squeeze’ also uses a melodic, catchy hook with a fast-paced delivery and funky 808’s forming the backbone of the track’s production, intended to serve as a solid opener and indicate that Poundz’s sound has solid Drill origins.

‘No Smoke Without Fire’ has also gifted listeners with features from Backroad Gee, iLL Blue (‘Chocolate Darling), Ambush, Snap Capone and Yxng Bane (‘Opp Thot’ Remix) and masterclass production by Honeywood6 and Elevated (‘Tik Tok’) – which all come on a sinister, but pumped-up frequency – where the unique production and explosive artist chemistry don’t fail to shine through and display the potential of these songs to really get a motive moving!

In contrast to the remaining works on the Tape, ‘Love You First’ highlights a different side to the artist, given his soft-spoken manner in the affectionate lyrics, and the romantic aura created through the acoustic sonics and mid-tempo RnDrill instrumental.

Poundz’s future on the scene is promising and given how ecstatic the compilation of his chosen tracks are for this body of work, it’s clear he’s out to continue flourishing and reach new heights on his journey through music.
